A Day in Pompeii

opportunity

Museum Victoria had planned a major exhibition on Pompeii at the Melbourne Museum called “A Day in Pompeii.” The Museum had created a mini surround-sound cinema and wanted an immersive digital component to the exhibition that was realistic, engaging and would educate and impress the broad exhibition target audience.

approach and method

The ZERO ONE team presented a number of concepts to Melbourne Museum who settled on telling the story of what happened to the city of Pompeii over a 24 hour period which tied in well with the exhibition’s title.

ZERO ONE spent 3 months creating a stunning stereoscopic re-creation of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. They worked closely with Melbourne Museum’s resident expert on Pompeii and researched numerous articles, descriptions and images to ensure it was an accurate representation of the city and the events that unfolded.

The story creates the feeling of a beautiful, lively city which has its peace shattered by one of the biggest natural disasters in history. The 7 minute video was set in the top floor of a villa overlooking the city towards Mt. Vesuvius. Melbourne Museum designed the cinema to match the style and decorations of the period which reinforced the feeling of being transported in time and place.

solution

The 6 meter X 4 meter stereoscopic projection with accompanying surround sound was the hit of the exhibition. 3D glasses were handed out to attendees who reported a wide range of emotions after the experience. The exhibition ran for over 4 months and was the most popular museum exhibition in Australia’s history with over 325,000 attendees, almost doubling its projected attendance figures. The animation continues to be shown at various exhibitions around the world.

result

We are proud to announce the completion of out latest project “A Day in Pompeii,” a stereoscopic recreation of the eruption Mt Vesuvius. The seven minute immersive sequence was created for the “A Day in Pompeii” exhibition at the Melbourne Museum, from there it will be travelling to different locations around the world.
